Kanpur is set to take centre stage in Uttar Pradesh’s growing defence manufacturing ambitions. The Strategic Uttar Pradesh: Kanpur Regional Defence Workshop, organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) in partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, will be held on September 2, 2026, from 9 AM.
The workshop will bring together representatives from the Ministry of Defence, Armed Forces, Defence PSUs, private defence companies, MSMEs, investors, academia and the Uttar Pradesh government to discuss the future of Kanpur’s defence-industrial ecosystem.
Kanpur is one of the six nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), alongside Lucknow, Jhansi, Agra, Aligarh and Chitrakoot. The corridor aims to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing, attract investment and build a stronger domestic defence supply chain.
The Kanpur node has already emerged as a major investment destination. According to Invest UP, investment proposals worth ₹12,803.58 crore had been received for the Kanpur node, with more than 210 hectares allotted to industries.
The city’s existing industrial base, MSMEs, engineering capabilities and proximity to institutions such as IIT Kanpur give it an important advantage. New opportunities are also emerging in areas including small arms and ammunition, precision manufacturing, aerospace components, special clothing and unmanned aerial systems.
For Kanpur, the September 2 workshop is therefore more than a policy discussion. It could help identify how local MSMEs can become part of defence supply chains, how the city can attract anchor companies and how investment can translate into manufacturing, innovation and employment opportunities.
