On June 27, 2025, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) officially commenced construction of two major urban development schemes—Aero City near Chakeri Airport and Knowledge City near IIT Kanpur—with a combined investment of ₹1,240 crore, as part of a broader ₹37,623 crore development push sourcing from 61 ongoing initiatives.
The development of the Aero City will cost ₹360 crore. It is being built using the public-private partnership (PPP) concept and spans 300 acres. It is intended to be an aerotropolis, a contemporary neighbourhood surrounding the airport that skilfully combines commercial, residential, and economic endeavours. The area would become a popular destination for investors and business owners with direct access via the national highway.
At the same time, the housing development body is investing ₹880 crore over 359 acres to build Knowledge City. Knowledge City seeks to advance technology innovation, research, and education.
Importantly, both initiatives show a shift away from the conventional fragmented method of development. Rather, they embody a comprehensive strategy for resilience, innovation, and inclusivity, laying the foundation for Kanpur to become one of India's genuinely smart cities.
