Kanpur Court Makes History: Accepts Testimony From Foreign Witness

Kanpur Court Embraces Technology: First-Ever Foreign Witness Testifies via Video Conference

This was the first time a witness from abroad used video conferencing to testify in court. The testimony was given by a defendant who lives in the United States and was part of a Kanpur property dispute lawsuit that was ordered by the Allahabad High Court. On February 25, a local court in Kanpur recorded the statement.

The issue reportedly involves Narendra Singh's alleged unlawful possession of a property. In 2014, he agreed to purchase the house from Rajkumari Shah, but he only paid half of the agreed-upon amount. The dispute started in 2014 when Rajkumari and her daughter Kavita, who is currently residing in Chicago, filed a complaint with the Chief Minister's office.

The Indian Consulate in Chicago facilitated the video conference testimony following the trial court's initial concerns. With consulate officials present, the procedure went well from 9:30 AM until 12:30 PM.

In courtrooms, technology can increase transparency, accessibility, and efficiency and this is one example of that. Virtual courtrooms, where people participate from outside the courthouse, may be a feature of the courtroom of the future.
