Uttar Pradesh's Innovative Green Drive Targets Urban Heat Reduction

Kriti Sawhney

In an attempt to cool overheated urban areas, Uttar Pradesh is beginning a first-of-its-kind green infrastructure project to plant miniature trees throughout major towns like Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Lucknow. This program is a component of the state's larger endeavours to enhance air quality, expand green space, and make natural areas more accessible to citizens.

Under the Upvan Scheme, the state government has allocated ₹70 crore for the establishment of urban mini-forests during the fiscal year 2025–2026. In order to create 2,000 square meters of green space inside their boundaries, the 17 municipal corporations have been authorised to spend up to 3 crore each. These green spaces are meant to promote ecologically friendly urban development and reduce surface temperatures.

The Miyawaki method, a Japanese technique known for creating dense, rapidly growing trees, is being used to create urban forests in locations like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Prayagraj. This approach helps cool metropolitan areas and enhances biodiversity by lowering surface temperatures.

351 'Nagar Vatika' and 'Nandan Van' have been developed by the state over 14 cities, totalling 722 hectares. By giving locals access to green spaces for enjoyment, these urban parks aim to raise environmental consciousness and enhance urban living.

The Uttar Pradesh government is developing an Urban Cooling Policy in partnership with organisations such as Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) and the Natural Resources Defence Council (NRDC). In order to efficiently control urban heat, this policy emphasises expanding green spaces, improving water features, and installing cool surfaces.
