In a strategic move to strengthen clean energy research and innovation, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has approved the establishment of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Green Hydrogen. This initiative will be jointly developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, under the Uttar Pradesh Green Hydrogen Policy–2024.

The Centre of Excellence is designed to become a state-wide hub for research, development, and deployment of green hydrogen technologies. Its key objectives include:

- Research & Development: Focus on all aspects of green hydrogen, including production, storage, transportation, safety standards, and industrial applications.

- Applied Innovation: Emphasis on real-world technological solutions for sectors such as refineries, fertilizer manufacturing, transportation, and energy systems.

- Testing & Demonstrations: Provide advanced infrastructure for testing new technologies and demonstrating scalable solutions.

- Industry Collaboration: Support industry adoption by developing standards and business-ready green hydrogen solutions.

The CoE will be operated jointly across both IIT Kanpur and HBTU campuses, utilizing shared laboratories, advanced equipment, and research infrastructure. Through this partnership, Uttar Pradesh is advancing its vision to become a major hub for green hydrogen research, industrial application, and technological leadership in India’s clean energy landscape.
