The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the National Scheme for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) Upgradation and the establishment of five (5) National Centres of Excellence for Skilling as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme, marking a significant step in the transformation of vocational education in India.

The plan will prioritise the establishment of five (5) National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) with the establishment of five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling, as well as the upgrading of 1,000 Government ITIs in hub-and-spoke arrangements with industry-aligned redesigned trades (courses).

Five National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) in Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kanpur, and Ludhiana will have their infrastructure upgraded as part of the program to provide better Training of Trainers (ToT) facilities.

Additionally, 50,000 trainers will receive pre-service and in-service training from it. In order to support India's ambition to become a global hub for manufacturing and innovation, the program intends to establish ITIs as important players in addressing the country's skilled workforce needs by tackling long-standing issues with infrastructure, course relevance, employability, and the perception of vocational training.

In line with the country's ambition to become a global manufacturing and innovation powerhouse, the program seeks to put ITIs at the forefront of meeting the demand for skilled labour by tackling long-standing issues with infrastructure, course relevance, employability, and the perception of vocational training. All things considered, skilling is a crucial enabler to satisfy present and future industrial demands, and the suggested plan is in line with the Prime Minister's vision of Viksit Bharat.
