Kanpur Metro has taken an important step towards expanding its network, with the first successful test run on Corridor 2 on October 13, 2026. The train travelled from the Chandra Shekhar Azad University (CSA) Metro Depot towards the ramp near Vijay Nagar at a cautious speed of 5–10 km/h.
The successful trial is a major milestone for Kanpur residents, especially those waiting for better public transport connectivity across the city.
According to the information shared by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), Corridor 2 will connect CSA to Barra-8, covering approximately 8.60 km with eight proposed stations.
During the initial test run, the train travelled along the downline, passing the underground stations at Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Puliya before reaching the section near Vijay Nagar.
The trial involved checking key systems, including track alignment, third-rail power supply, signalling, emergency brakes, wheels and door operations. The train was operated manually at a low speed as part of the initial safety checks. Further testing at higher speeds is expected in subsequent stages.
Although the successful test run is encouraging news, Kanpur Metro Corridor 2 is not yet ready for passenger services. The newly built section will undergo further technical inspections and testing before it can receive the necessary clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).
Passenger services can begin only after the required safety approvals are secured.
For Kanpur residents, the expansion promises another step towards easier daily commutes and improved connectivity between important parts of the city. Until the new section opens, passengers can continue using the operational Corridor 1 route between IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central.
