Kanpur’s public transport landscape is set for a major transformation as the Kanpur Metro Rail Project moves closer to completing its most crucial corridor. The IIT Kanpur–Naubasta stretch of the Orange Line (Corridor-1) is scheduled to undergo full-scale test runs in January 2026, marking a significant step towards citywide metro connectivity.
Once operational, this extension will connect Kanpur from north to south, improving daily commutes for lakhs of residents and expanding the total number of metro stations in the city to 29.
Five elevated stations—Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Buddh Nagar, and Naubasta—as well as two new underground stations—Jhankarkati and Transport Nagar—will be included in this extension. For areas like Govind Nagar, Kidwai Nagar, and Naubasta, the metro is expected to significantly boost local connectivity and real estate value.
Additionally, the Kanpur Metro has significantly aided in the preservation of the environment. IGBC Platinum ratings have been given to seven subterranean stations, and the President's Energy Conservation Award has been given to the IIT Kanpur station.
As January 2026 approaches, focus will remain on completing final civil works, installing advanced systems, and conducting uninterrupted trial runs. Once certified, the full IIT–Naubasta metro corridor will mark a new chapter in Kanpur’s public transport journey.
For residents, this means faster, safer, and more efficient travel—bringing the city closer together, one station at a time.
