In view of the severe cold wave and persistent dense fog, schools in Kanpur will remain closed for students from Nursery to Class 12 on December 19 and 20, as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety. The decision has been taken following weather advisories predicting very low visibility during early morning hours, making daily commutes unsafe for children.
Kanpur has been witnessing thick fog and plunging temperatures, with visibility dropping sharply during mornings and late nights. The foggy conditions have affected road traffic, rail services, and routine movement across the city. According to weather experts, these conditions are likely to continue for the next few days due to northwesterly winds and cold air circulation across Uttar Pradesh.
With most schools operating in early morning shifts, authorities decided that keeping schools open could pose serious risks to students, especially younger children who rely on school transport or walk short distances in low-visibility conditions.
Educational institutions have been instructed to avoid physical classes on these dates.
With winter vacations usually scheduled around the third week of December, the fog-related closures may merge with upcoming winter holidays, giving students an extended break if cold conditions persist.
