Roads made from plastic waste? Yes please! In a first, 20 roads will be built from plastic waste in Kanpur. For this purpose, 30 tons of plastic waste confiscated in the garbage disposal plant will be used. This step has been taken to reduce pollution and use the otherwise harmful plastic waste lying in garbage dumps.

170 roads are to be built in the city at a cost of Rs. 106 crores by the Municipal Corporation and the tender for the same will be issued in two days. Roads built from plastic waste are being given the highest priority. At least three to four roads in each zone will be made from plastic waste. 20 of these roads will be built at a cost of Rs. 14 crore.

Benefits of plastic roads:

· Construction cost of plastic roads is reduced by replacing a part of bitumen with cheaper plastic waste.

· Roads made of plastic waste last longer thus reducing repair costs.

· Plastic roads resist water damage, potholes and high temperatures better.

· These roads are less likely to crack and can handle more traffic, heavier vehicle loads.

Here is what the Municipal Commissioner had to say about this:

“For the first time in the city, preparations will be made to build roads from plastic waste. The roads will be less damaged during rains, so initially 20 roads have been taken under the 15th Finance.
                                                           - Sudhir Kumar, Municipal Commissioner
