At IIT Kanpur, a unique student-led initiative called Panchamrit is proving exactly that. By contributing just ₹5 per week, students have come together to provide nutritious meals to underprivileged children studying at the Opportunity School located on the IIT Kanpur campus.
What started as a simple idea has now evolved into a heartwarming community movement that is improving nutrition, school attendance, and the overall well-being of nearly 250 children.
A Small Contribution With a Big Impact:
The Panchamrit initiative is entirely supported by IIT Kanpur students. Every participating student contributes a small weekly amount from their pocket money, creating a sustainable fund that finances healthy mid-day meals for children from economically weaker families.
With more than 1,600 IIT Kanpur students participating, the initiative has become an inspiring example of how collective giving can create meaningful social change.
The program reportedly costs around ₹3,000 per child annually, making it an affordable yet impactful model for community-driven support.

The initiative has received strong backing from Padma Shri Prof. HC Verma, one of India's most respected physics educators and former IIT Kanpur professor.
Prof. Verma believes the program does more than provide meals—it also helps IIT students understand the realities faced by economically disadvantaged children while encouraging empathy and social responsibility.
