Unlike the widespread tradition of burning effigies of Ravana during Dussehra to symbolize the victory of good over evil, this temple opens its doors to worship the demon king, acknowledging his profound devotion to Lord Shiva and his scholarly prowess.
The Dashanan Temple is situated within the Kailasha temple complex in the Shivala area of Kanpur. It was constructed by Maharaj Guru Prasad Shukla, a resident of the neighboring Unnao district, to honor Ravana's devotion to Lord Shiva and his scholarly achievements.
When the demon king emerges from imprisonment on Vijay Dashmi, the temple, also called Dashanan temple, is temporarily unlocked and worshipped before being shut up once more till the following Dussehra.
On Dussehra, when most of India celebrates the triumph of good over evil by burning effigies of Ravana, the Dashanan Temple comes alive with chants of "Jai Lankesh" and "Lankapati Naresh ki Jai Ho." Devotees gather to offer prayers, light oil lamps, and seek blessings for wisdom and strength. The temple opens its doors early in the morning, and a special aarti is performed. By evening, after the community effigy burning, the temple doors are closed until the next Dussehra.
This tradition highlights the subtle understanding of Ravana in certain parts of India, where he is honored for his virtues rather than vilified for his actions.
