An important milestone in the region's eye care history has been reached with the establishment of Kanpur's first eye bank at Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College. The new clinic, which is housed in the Hallet Hospital building, will provide vital support for patients in need of corneal transplants and serve patients from Kanpur and ten surrounding districts.
With its state-of-the-art refrigeration and temperature-controlled storage, the new facility has the capacity to keep 400 corneas.
First Eye Bank In Kanpur:
Every day, about 200 patients visit GSVM Medical College's ophthalmology department. In the past, few patients would leave without receiving treatment due to lack of cornea storage facilities. But now that a new eye bank has been opened, the department has ten times the storage capacity it had before, along with cutting-edge refrigeration technologies that can keep corneas fresh for up to a month.
Additionally, the facility has two cutting-edge labs that were created in partnership with Sight Savers, USA. Better research will be possible as a result, and donated corneas will be preserved to a high standard.
