As summers in India grow harsher every year, the demand for effective and sustainable cooling solutions has never been greater. Now, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) have come up with a game-changing innovation—a “super cool sheet” that can reduce indoor temperatures by a remarkable 10–12 degrees Celsius, all without electricity, water, or the noise of machines.

This sheet's white surface reflects the sun's rays since it is composed of special cotton and synthetic polymer. It doesn't need a frame of any type and can be attached straight to the wall, roof, or water tank. This IIT sheet is accessible for approximately Rs 50 to Rs 60 per square foot, but regular sheets cost between Rs 100 and Rs 200 per square foot in the market.

It has been shown to cut electricity use by 25 to 30 percent in homes and factories. Gititech, a startup firm at IIT, has begun manufacturing and is currently delivering its products to the general public.

The super cool sheet eliminates these concerns, providing a low-cost, eco-friendly alternative that aligns with India’s growing push for green technologies and energy conservation.

With this invention, IIT Kanpur has put India at the forefront of green cooling technologies. If adopted widely, this could redefine how urban and rural India deals with extreme summer heat, reducing power cuts and promoting a cleaner, greener future.
