A nationwide civil defence mock drill has been announced by the Indian government for May 7, 2025, amid increased tensions with Pakistan following the terror assault in Pahalgam. In order to prepare for warlike emergencies, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed 244 districts to carry out the exercise, which will involve evacuation exercises, air raid sirens, blackout simulations, and public training sessions.

This is happening for the first time after 1971. The purpose of a civil defence mock drill is to test the readiness of government and civilian systems in the event of a conflict, missile attack, or aerial assault. Air raid sirens sound, city lights are switched off, citizens rehearse sheltering techniques, and emergency personnel work in real time as the exercises replicate real-life situations. By raising knowledge and preparedness, these exercises seek to prevent confusion, lessen fear, and save lives.

You can encounter brief blackouts, cell signal suspensions, or traffic detours throughout the exercise. Authorities may also make public statements or practise evacuations. In certain places, paramilitary and police forces could act as though there is a war.

People are encouraged by the government to view this as a preparation exercise. It's not a panic attack. The exercise helps the public and the government better understand their roles. Officials are supposed to evaluate the results and, if necessary, make adjustments.
