The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) commemorated World Environment Day 2025 by highlighting its noteworthy advancements in environmental sustainability, thereby demonstrating its dedication to green urban mobility. This year's subject, "Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience," allowed UPMRC to adapt its programs to the changing requirements of urban India while also aligning them with global aims.
Greener Metro Operations
The Lucknow Metro's operator, UPMRC, which is also actively growing its networks in Kanpur and Agra, emphasised that sustainability was a key consideration in the development of its metro routes. Renewable energy sources, mainly solar power systems on top of stations, depots, and administrative buildings, are now providing more than 70% of the networks' energy demands.
Water Conservation & Green Infrastructure
The extensive rainwater harvesting systems that UPMRC has installed at practically every metro station were one of the major achievements that were highlighted. With yearly savings estimated at thousands of kilolitres, these systems have greatly decreased reliance on groundwater. Furthermore, in addition to improving aesthetics, vertical gardens and green belts along the corridors have also assisted in reducing the urban heat island effect.
Carbon Footprint Reduction
UPMRC says it has helped offset hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year by promoting a modal shift from private vehicles to mass rapid transit. With more than a million commuters anticipated each day throughout its existing and planned metro lines, the carbon savings are anticipated to grow significantly over the next several years.
Green Drive On The Ground
With the active participation of UPMRC staff, students, and local residents, a huge plantation drive was conducted concurrently across several locations in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra to commemorate the event. Throughout the day, there were additional eco-awareness tests, exhibitions, and awareness seminars.
UPMRC continues to establish a standard for sustainable public transit in India with a strong track record and ambitious objectives, demonstrating the effectiveness and transformative potential of green infrastructure.
