IIT Kanpur will be transformed into a mega hub of artificial intelligence and intelligent systems to foster research and innovation in robotics, cyber security, and AI. This was declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a function held in Delhi. An MOU has been signed in this regard by Dr. Ajay Kela, the president and CEO of the Wadhwani Foundation, and Prof. Manindra Agarwal, the director of IIT Kanpur.
Two super centres would be established nationwide, according to PM Modi's announcement. In this, IIT Kanpur will house the super hub for artificial intelligence and intelligent systems, while IIT Bombay will house the super hub for bioscience, biotechnology, health, and medicine. In 2026, admission will begin for the Intelligent Systems Department's first class of students. Prof. Manindra Agarwal, the director of IIT Kanpur, announced the opening of the Wadhwani School of Advanced Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems.
In addition to strengthening the network of 50 partner centres nationwide, the Wadhwani Foundation is helping to build a top-notch teaching and research centre on campus. This centre has five basic research centres and a department of intelligent systems, according to Prof. Agarwal. These will work on robotics, advanced artificial intelligence, the development of intelligent systems, cyber security, cyber security of cyber-physical systems, AI policy, and outreach.
IIT Kanpur has long been known for its advances in basic sciences, engineering, and computer science. Its objective to provide technological solutions that have practical applications has been greatly expanded by this new collaboration. Experts in algorithms, hardware, policy, biological sciences, and social sciences will collaborate on interdisciplinary projects at the Wadhwani School.
