Kanpur Elevated Road: ₹1500 Crore Project Update

10.2 km road from Gol Chauraha to Ramadevi to ease traffic; DPR sent to Delhi for final approval

Raghav

Kanpur is set to get a major infrastructure boost with a proposed 10.2-kilometer elevated road from Gol Chauraha to Ramadevi. The project, estimated to cost around ₹1500 crore, aims to reduce heavy traffic and daily jams in one of the city’s busiest corridors.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has now been sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Delhi for final approval. Officials are hopeful that once the green signal is received, the tender process will begin soon.

DPR Sent for Final Approval

The file has been forwarded from the Lucknow headquarters to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

After technical review, the project is likely to receive clearance. If approved, budget allocation and the tender process could begin in early 2026.

Why This Elevated Road Matters

Kanpur, one of the largest cities in Uttar Pradesh, faces heavy traffic congestion, especially between Gol Chauraha and Ramadevi. This stretch sees constant pressure from daily commuters, commercial vehicles, and industrial transport.

Once completed, the elevated road will:

  • Reduce traffic jams

  • Shorten travel time

  • Improve road safety

  • Help lower vehicle pollution

Delay in DPR Preparation

Work on the DPR began in January 2024. Due to technical changes and revisions, the report was modified nearly 20 times over 21 months. A detailed 500-page DPR has now been finalized and sent for approval.

PWD NH engineers say all required technical checks have been completed.

When Will Construction Start?

The project is currently awaiting final approval from Delhi. Officials expect clearance in early 2026. After that:

  • Budget approval will follow

  • Tenders will be issued

  • Construction may begin by mid to late 2026

This elevated road is expected to significantly improve traffic flow and support Kanpur’s urban development.

Summary

The ₹1500 crore elevated road project from Gol Chauraha to Ramadevi in Kanpur is moving closer to approval. The 10.2 km corridor aims to reduce traffic jams and improve connectivity in one of the busiest areas of the city. The DPR has been sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in Delhi for final approval. If approved in early 2026, the tender process and construction work could begin soon after. This project is expected to play a key role in improving Kanpur’s traffic system and overall urban development.
