Festivals bring out the cheerful side of us all. But very often, we do not realize the harmful impact our conscious and unconscious practices might have on the environment, especially during celebrations. This year, to protect our rivers and in an effort to bring environmental pollution to a bare minimum, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has built artificial ponds at eight places in the city for Ganpati Visarjan.

Ganeshotsav 2024 commenced on September 7 and ever since, people have been visiting the pandals in the city with a holy and festive spirit. An important tradition of Ganesh Chaturthi is the Ganesh Visarjan. So, this year, for the immersion of Lord Gajanan, KMC has built artificial ponds at eight places in Kanpur namely Kali Ghat in Parmat, Ganga Barrage, Massacre Ghat in Cantonment, Gola Ghat, Koyla Ghat, Siddhnath Ghat, Dyodhi Ghat and on the banks of Armapur Canals.

Around two to three pits have been dug at all the places. Water has been filled from Ganga River by installing pumps in seven artificial ponds while water has been filled from Lower Ganga Canal in the eighth artificial pond.

Not just this, to make the process smooth, one junior engineer has been put on duty at each place. Barricading has been put up at each of these spots with proper cleaning. Streets lights to the roads leading the areas have also been repaired.

This year, let’s celebrate the festive season with full fervor while being conscious of our environment. Remember: The Earth is what we all have in common and it is our duty to preserve its sanctity.
