Kanpurites have reason to celebrate this Republic Day! The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) is gearing up to inaugurate the full stretch of Metro Line-1, connecting IIT Kanpur to Naubasta, on 26th January 2026.

With the remaining elevated section from Bara Devi to Naubasta now completed, this development marks a major milestone for the city’s expanding metro network. The section will soon undergo safety trials and inspection before opening for public use.

Currently, the underground section from Chunniganj to Jhakarkatti (Central to Transport Nagar) is still under construction and is expected to be completed in the following phases.

The full operational launch of Line-1 will link key residential, educational, and commercial zones, making travel across Kanpur smoother than ever. It’s also expected to reduce road congestion, cut down pollution, and offer a modern, sustainable transport alternative to residents.

With each new stretch, Kanpur’s metro network continues to reshape the city’s identity — blending modern infrastructure with convenience and progress. As the countdown to January 26 begins, the excitement among locals is already building up for what promises to be a truly transformative addition to the city’s skyline.

The Kanpur Metro project, launched in 2021, has been steadily progressing with UPMRC maintaining an impressive pace of construction and safety standards. With this latest expansion, the city edges closer to having a fully functional metro corridor that will transform urban mobility for thousands of daily commuters.
