In an effort to get the younger generation involved in sports and away from mobile devices, the Kanpur Olympic Association is hosting the Youth Olympic Games from April 25 to May 5. In 27 sporting events, more than 5,000 athletes from more than 14 schools and academies in the city will compete. The competition would focus on traditional sports including Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, wrestling, Mallakhamb, and Kaliyarpattu, an old Keralan martial art.
A torch procession will begin on April 17 to spread excitement and engage the community, passing through city schools and introducing athletes and their parents to the joys of athletics.
The UP Olympic Association's Player Welfare Committee President, Rajat Aditya Dixit, stressed that all schools, whether run by the Municipal Corporation, UP Board, ICSE, or CBSE, will participate in the games. The objective is to develop school-level talent and get pupils ready for state and national contests in order to transform Kanpur into a sports hub.
In addition to the traditional sports stated above, the Youth Olympic Games will include 27 events, such as archery, taekwondo, karate, powerlifting, skating, volleyball, basketball, judo, and swimming. Young athletes will get the opportunity to display their abilities and talents at the tournaments, which will be held at different schools throughout the city.
Additionally, 21 neglected playgrounds throughout the city are being restored by the Kanpur Olympic Association. These places will be refurbished to give kids access to open spaces for sports after being impacted by encroachment and bad conditions. The project intends to promote young physical activity and restore the city's sports culture.
